|
|
Time for me to jump on the new rig bandwagon too, probably within the next month or so. Here's what I'm looking at so far... input would be greatly appreciated!
XFX - nForce 680i SLI w/ DualDDR2 1200, 7.1 Audio, Dual GB Lan, 1394, Dual PCI-E x16 SLI
Intel - Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 2.4GHz w/ 2x4MB Cache
Patriot - Extreme Performance DDR2 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 Eased Latency Dual Channel Kit
2 x Seagate - 80GB Barracuda 7200.10 SATA II w/ NCQ, 8MB Cache
1 x Seagate - 500GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II w/ NCQ, 32MB Cache
XFX - GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDTV-Out
LG - Super Multi DVD Writer 18x18x10 DVD +/-RW Dual-Layer, SATA w/ Lightscribe, Black (OEM)
Total cost: ~$1700 CDN
The two 80GB drives aren't set in stone at this point. I'm thinking about a RAID 1+0 for the OS across those 2, then having the 500GB dedicated to games. And just one video card for now, with the hopes of buying a second one in 6 months or so for SLI goodness.
Any glaring mistakes in this list? I didn't realize how far behind my knowledge is in the desktop area... le sigh... _________________

| I can't even fathom a new PC. I'm still using the one I built in 2003 and it does everything I need it to do! |

Same with me, although I just upgraded the video card on the dual athlon to run hl2 with some resemblance of goodness.
Suxor, you thought about purchasing the system parts in the US? Your Canadian dollar might go further this summer. _________________

After a brutal start to the month I walked into my local parts shop on Thursday and decided to bite the bullet. Here's what I came out with:
eVGA - nForce 680i SLI w/ DualDDR2 1200, 7.1 Audio, Dual GB Lan, 1394, Dual PCI-E x16 SLI
Intel - Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 2.4GHz w/ 2x4MB Cache
OCZ - 4GB PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2 Kit (2 x 2GB)
Seagate - 80GB Barracuda 7200.10 SATA II w/ NCQ, 8MB Cache
Seagate - 500GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II w/ NCQ, 32MB Cache
2 x BFG - GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDTV-Out
PIONEER - DVR-115D 20x DVD+/-RW Drive
ANTEC - Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case
OCZ - 850W GameXStream Power Supply w/ Quad +12V
Doubled the RAM and went with 2 vid cards (rather than one) for about the same cost. Threw Vista 64-bit on there (to test - not sold on it yet) and have been playing around with Crysis, Bioshock, MoH: Airborne, Gears of War and HL2 since Friday. Pretty sweeeeet! _________________

From a quick glance of the specs, and the heat issues, I think you need more fans in the case.
Nice rig there sux. _________________

I got a free upgrade from some buddies:
Socket 939 mobo
Athlon 3700+
2 GB PC3200
8800 DDC (factory overclock)
So far, better than the old stuff. Mortgages and trips are expensive and take priority over PC stuff.
However, I do have it mated to my Sharp Aquos 46" 120hz LCD. FarCry2 looks interesting, I'd love to see it on newer hardware on this TV.
I can run it decently, still looks better than HL2 but I'm not sold an a $1000 upgrade yet.
